Signals — October 2026

Three short observations from the edge of capital + code. No forecasts with a year attached.

Self-hosting is a hiring signal, not just a cost signal. Teams that run their own relays and relays-as-a-service both frame it as cost, but the teams that nail it are hiring differently — the relay admin and the SRE are now the same job.

Nostr protocols matured twice this year. The spec work is reaching the “boring, stable, documentable” phase — which is when real products get built on it (see 0xChat and GUPT in our WEB3 feed).

CLI-first distribution is outgrowing dashboards. The fastest-growing tools in our portfolio are installed with one command and configured in one file. The laptop flag: if your beta users run you in tmux, you’re close.

The pitch that opens with the fallback plan wins. Show us what happens when the LLM vendor tripled prices and the incumbent shipped your top feature — the founders who prepared that slide are the ones who survive the bottom of the market.

That’s the feed for October. Reply-flag any signal you want expanded into a full post.
